Digital twins, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tools are playing an increasing role in data center design, construction and operations. They are helping data center managers envision how equipment will look and function in the data center, how to improve air and cooling flow and eliminate hot spots, how to improve the monitoring of data center operations and how to enhance maintenance and training activities.
Here are a few of the tools gaining traction:
Data center infrastructure management
Data center infrastructure management (DCIM) has been around for years. It is widely used in many data centers but hasn’t become universally used yet. That is changing due to two factors: the concept of data center digitalization is gaining ground, and IT is becoming more integrated with operational technology (OT) systems such as building management systems (BMS) and power management tools.
Serverfarm InCommand is one of several data center management-as-a-service (DMaaS) platforms harnessing DCIM to bridge the gap between IT and OT. Its software gathers data from a multitude of sensors and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered applications to monitor infrastructure, thereby aggregating data across devices and systems into one portal.
It can sift through thousands of alerts and provide aggregated insights to data center managers. For example, one data center was generating 90,000 alerts in a month. Serverfarm boiled this down to 108 alerts that required some form of human intervention.
